History of Oriental Carpets in Pakistan
Oriental Carpets are made from the Balkans to China and from Caucasus to Indo-Pak Subcontinent. Pakistan has been very faithfully following the ancient techniques in making oriental carpets and rugs. Of course modern fast dyes and chemicals are being used for coloring and washing; still the basic technique is the same as has been inherited from the years gone by.

In the subcontinent, which now comprises Pakistan and India, the craftsmanship of carpet making was first started in Lahore in the reign of Akbar the Great. The industry received good patronage from all successive Mughal emperors and the ruling chiefs under them. But it was only in the beginning of 20th century that that this art began to develops on commercial lines. With independence of Pakistan, making of Oriental carpets got a new lease of life. Carpet weaving artisans of India who were mostly Muslims, migrated to Pakistan; with the result that Pakistan is now producing all types of hand made carpets.
